University alumni honoured

Alumni award winners
Five university alumni have been honoured for their outstanding contributions to business and commerce, science and technology, and the community at a reception in the Scientia.

David Gonski received an alumni achievement award for his outstanding leadership and innovation in the field of business and commerce. Gonksi is chairman of Investec Bank (Australia), Hoyts Cinema, Coca-Cola Amatil, and the National Institute of Dramatic Art, a director of Westfield Holdings, and president of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Community Business Partnership and widely regarded as one of the foremost thinkers in Australian corporate law.

Two alumni who are current staff members were honoured for their exceptional contribution in the field of science and technology, as well as to the wider community. Associate Professor Levon Khachigian was recognised for his outstanding achievements in health and medical research, in particular in the area of vascular research, while Associate Professor Robyn Ward was honoured for her exceptional innovation as a leading researcher and clinician in the field of cancer management and treatment.

Professor Jennie Brand-Miller, currently working in the school of molecular and microbial biosciences at the University of Sydney, was awarded for excellence in the field of science and technology. Brand-Miller is internationally recognised for her work on diet and diabetes.

Vivi Koutsounadis-Germanos was honoured for her outstanding leadership and contribution to the community at large. Koutsounadis-Germanos is a welfare worker in the areas of multiculturalism, access, equity and social justice. She has been awarded the Order of Australia medal, the National Australia Day Achiever Award and the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s Human Rights Medal.

The Chancellor, Dr John Yu, and the Patron of the Alumni Association, Sir Rupert Myers, presented the achievement awards. In addressing the reception, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Development and Alumni Affairs, Jane Bloomfield, noted the important contribution UNSW alumni make to the wider community.
