Postgraduate students from the University of New South Wales have taken a top prize in the Boston Consulting Group Business Strategy Competition, one of the most prestigious business competitions in Australia. The UNSW team was named first runner-up and a team from AGSM came in second runner-up.

The six finalist teams were given three hours to prepare a 10-minute presentation outlining their recommended growth strategy for Global Citizen, a fictional publisher of travel guides, before responding to a series of questions from the judging panel.

“We’re delighted with the result, especially as it’s the first year we’ve entered a post graduate team,” said Rodney Coyte, UNSW accounting lecturer and team coach. “It’s a very difficult competition and the team performed exceptionally well. It was testimony to the quality of our postgraduate students across many faculties.”

The team was made up of students from finance, marketing, accounting and business and technology, who applied their training and skills to analyse a ‘never seen before’ case study and present a workable solution in the contemporary commercial climate.

Open to all universities in Australia and New Zealand, the competition provided students with an insight into the world of management consulting and the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to issues faced in the corporate world.

The competition has been running since 1991 and the Boston Consulting Group has been its major sponsor since 2001.
