MEDIA, NEWS & EVENTSGender equity: walking the talk27 October 2003 All staff are invited to the first in a speaker series on gender equity in the workplace organised by the Equity and Diversity Unit. This first forum will explore gender equity issues in academic employment. The forum will be held this Friday (31 October), between 12 noon and 1.30pm, in the Tyree Room of the Scientia. It will feature Michael Bittman, Senior Research Fellow at UNSW's Social Policy Research Centre, and Professor Margaret Gardner, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), at the University of Queensland. Michael has undertaken extensive research on how we use our time in the workplace, to explore the tensions of balancing work and life commitments. He will speak about this research, and draw on his personal experience as a male academic, to look at some of the major issues confronting academics. Professor Gardner, previously Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Equity) at Griffith University, founded and co-convened the National Colloquium of Women Senior Executives in Higher Education. She will examine the issue of gender and leadership in academia and reflect on her experience of negotiating the career ladder at Australian universities. The forum will also hear from the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rory Hume, who will provide an update on progress being made under the Gender Equity in Academic Employment Project and will launch two exciting new initiatives, the PhD completion Scholarship and Gender Equity Grants. RSVP to Brendan Bolger in the Equity and Diversity Unit, or ph 9385 4734. |
