Powering towards the finish line in UNSW Sustainable Living Competition
3rd December 2004
A class of Year 9 students, who are using pedal power to make their school more environmentally friendly, are racing towards the finish line in this year’s Sustainable Living Competition.
The winners will be announced at the University of New South Wales’ Sustainable Living Expo and Awards Day next week.
For their entry, the students at Ariah Park Central School in Wagga Wagga have come up with a novel way to heat their classroom in winter, get fit and make sure everyone toes the line.
The students have designed a bike, which powers a classroom heater through a solar collector in the playground and heats the room through homemade ducting.
The project is one of the 19 finalists in the competition.
As well as the awards ceremony, which will be hosted by Triple J’s Rosie Beaton, the finalists will showcase their work at the event. There will also be workshops and presentations by leading UNSW experts on sustainability.
