Four outstanding researchers have been named Scientia Professors, an award recognising academics who have achieved international eminence in research. They are Professors Mark Bradford, Richard Bryant, David Cooper and John Roberts.
Professor Bradford of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, who recently received an Australian Government Federation Fellowship, has specialised for twenty years in the behaviour of steel structures and his research has influenced industry codes and design principles for civil engineers in Australia and internationally.
Professor Bryant of the School of Psychology is one of the world's leading researchers into post-traumatic stress disorder and he is widely accredited with developing the formula to identify people acutely at risk of suffering the condition. His awards include the Medal from the Academy of the Social Sciences.
Professor Cooper of the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research is recognised internationally as a leading HIV clinician and clinical investigator. He is a member of the UNAIDS Management Committee for a major trial in Africa and Director of HIVNAT, a clinical research and trials collaboration in Thailand. He is a past president of the International AIDS Society.
Professor Roberts of the Australian Graduate School of Management was recently made a Fellow of the Australian Market and Social Research Society. He holds a joint appointment as Professor of Marketing at both AGSM and London Business School. He is regarded as one of the top marketing scholars in the region.
Professor Joseph Forgas of the School of Psychology and Professor Martin Green of the Key Centre for Photovoltaic Engineering have been reappointed as Scientia Professors for a further four years.
To be awarded the title of Scientia Professor, academics must be nominated by their peers and supported by referees of international standing.
In other appointments, Professor John Dwyer of the Prince of Wales Hospital Clinical School becomes an Emeritus Professor on his retirement at the end of the year. Professor Robin Fell of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering also will become an Emeritus Professor when he retires in January.
