MEDIA, NEWS & EVENTSThe Sex Discrimination Act - A 20-year review: UNSW Law Journal14 December 2004 This year marks the 20th anniversary of the enactment of the Commonwealth Sex Discrimination Act. The latest issue of the UNSW Law Journal, The Sex Discrimination Act - A Twenty Year Review, takes the opportunity presented by this milestone to examine the effectiveness of the Act in achieving its essential objective of equality between men and women, and to consider what further measures might be necessary to achieve this goal. The publication encompasses a range of views on the Act and a number of suggestions for reform, with contributions by various experts in the field including:
Articles cover such issues as sexual harassment and sex discrimination within the workplace, in particular within the legal profession; the topical issue of balancing work and family responsibilities; and the effect of the Act from an employer's perspective. "This publication makes a useful and timely contribution to the ongoing debate surrounding the existence of gender inequality in society and means of addressing this issue," said Journal editor, Claire Morgan. The Hon Margaret Stone, Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, will launch the publication at the offices of Freehills in Sydney on Tuesday 14 December 2004. The UNSW Law Journal is a refereed publication and one of the most widely cited legal reviews in Australia. It is also the only entirely student-run publication of its kind.
