National forum on Australia's first Bill of Rights

29th June 2004

Is Australia’s first Bill of Rights a landmark development or a negative step in the protection of human rights in Australia?

This is one of the key questions to be addressed at a national forum on the new ACT Human Rights Act 2004, to take place at the National Museum of Australia on Thursday 1 July, the day the legislation comes into effect.

ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope will open the forum and the keynote speaker is Shadow Federal Attorney-General Nicola Roxon, who will talk about Bills of Rights and political leadership. Other speakers include leading academics from around Australia.

The event is hosted by the UNSW Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law and the ANU Centre for International and Public Law.

A new book by UNSW Professor George Williams, director of the Gilbert + Tobin Centre, entitled The Case for an Australian Bill of Rights: Freedom in the War on Terror (UNSW Press) will be launched by Nicola Roxon following the forum.
