UNSW has had significant success in the 2005 round of funding from the Australian Research Council, securing more than $34 million in Discovery project grants for 104 proposals and nearly $5 million in Linkage project grants for a further 21 applications.
UNSW’s Linkage grants carry with them contributions from industry partners of an additional $7 million.
This is the best outcome for UNSW since 1997, putting UNSW into the top three Australian universities in terms of ARC funding.
“This is an excellent outcome for UNSW,“ the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Ian Petersen, said. “We warmly congratulate all those researchers whose high-quality work will benefit from this process.”
The Minister for Science, Education and Training, Dr Brendan Nelson, announced the grants this week. Totalling $381 million over five years, the grants will fund 1,387 new research projects nationally from 2005.
ARC Linkage Projects grants encourage the formation of long-term strategic alliances between university researchers and their collaborating partner organisations. Industry and other partner organisations will contribute $80.4 million to these projects, investing $1.45 for every dollar of Government funding.
The new grants are awarded under the National Competitive Grants Program, an initiative of Backing Australia’s Ability (BAA).
