Sustainability deadline approaches

2nd November 2004

Budding young innovators with a passion for the environment have a week to submit their projects for this year’s Sustainable Living Competition at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

One of last year’s winners, David Larsson of Kogarah, developed a rainwater harvesting system to be installed inside the roof of a house. Since he entered the program, a major manufacturer has developed his product for commercial sale.

Other award-winning designs from 2003 include a solar-powered lawn mower, a Nepalese wind turbine and an environmental labelling system designed to encourage sustainable consumption in young people.

This year, high school students taking part in the national program will have their chance to make their mark and share in more than $20,000 prize money.

The competition, which is hosted by the Faculty of the Built Environment, is the largest event of this type in the country. It rewards students for environmental and sustainability projects undertaken in the classroom, individually or by entire school communities.

Finalists in the Sustainable Living Competition will be brought to UNSW for the 2004 Sustainable Living Expo and Awards day on Monday, 6 December. The awards day includes interactive stalls, educational workshops and the prize giving ceremony hosted by Triple J Super request’s Rosie Beaton.

The program has nine categories, including awards for best environmental management plan, community outreach, innovation, design and research and investigation.

Entries for 2004 are due by Friday, 29 October.
