Gabrielle Upton appointed Deputy Chancellor

The UNSW Council has elected Ms Gabrielle Upton as the University's new Deputy Chancellor, commencing 1 January 2006.

Ms Upton will take over the position from Mr John Pascoe AO, whose term of office will finish on 31 December 2005. Her appointment is for two years.

Ms Upton, a graduate of UNSW, has a background as a lawyer and banker and is currently legal counsel at the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Following her graduation, Ms Upton worked as a solicitor at one of Australia's largest law firms, Freehills, and then at Phillips Fox as a banking lawyer. She completed her Masters of Business Administration at New York University in 1995 and worked in New York as an Assistant Vice President in the corporate finance division at Deutsche Bank and Toronto Dominion Bank.

Ms Upton was elected to the University Council in 2002. She serves as a member of UNSW's Audit and Risk Management Committees and was appointed as Pro-Chancellor in February 2005.
