Design competition launched for UNSW Asia campus in Singapore
17th May 2005
The successful firm will develop and implement a master plan for the 22-hectare greenfield site at Changi and design the University’s iconic Library building.
The five short-listed candidates in the competition by invitation are: WOHA and Kerry Hill Architects, both Singapore based; and Australia-Singapore partnerships FJMT/Architects 61; BVN/RSP Architects; and CM+/Geoff Malone International.
The successful firm will be announced at a press conference in Singapore on 28 June, following jury presentations on 17 June in Sydney.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International & Development), Professor John Ingleson, said: “This is a very significant and exciting project internationally. We are committed to creating a high quality, sustainable, tropical campus for the 21st Century.”
“A key reason why the Singapore Government chose UNSW to establish the country’s first foreign university is its confidence that we could recreate the unique ‘UNSW educational experience’ in Singapore.
“This extends to the quality of the built environment. UNSW’s Sydney campus is home to a number of notable buildings, including the internationally-acclaimed and award-winning Scientia building. Our intention is to translate that success to Changi,” Professor Ingleson said.
This is the first in a series of design competitions for UNSW Asia. Round Two will be launched in October for the science/engineering building and academic/administration building.
UNSW Asia will be Singapore’s first foreign university and the first wholly owned and operated research and teaching campus to be established overseas by any Australian university.

To be eligible for the competition by invitation, companies had to be either registered in Singapore or compete in association with a Singapore practice.
The brief is for a master plan of the 22-hectare greenfield site at South Changi that includes 15 hectares for the university, to be built in a number of stages, and five hectares for student and staff accommodation.
The campus is located between Upper Changi Road East and Changi South Avenue, approximately 400m north of the Expo Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station, which is one station away from Changi Airport.
It is expected that construction of the campus will commence in late 2006 for completion of Stage One, which comprises three major buildings and landscaping, by late 2008.
UNSW Asia will commence in temporary accommodation at the former campus of Republic Polytechnic.
The Government of Singapore invited UNSW, after a thorough due diligence process, to establish Singapore’s first foreign university as part of its long-term plan to build a regional educational hub.
UNSW Asia will be the first wholly owned and operated research and teaching campus to be established overseas by any Australian university. It will offer a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees. The first students will be enrolled in 2007.
