Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training, Brendan Nelson, this week opened a new award-winning building on UNSW's western campus. The building, at 223 Anzac Parade, includes a state-of-the-art laboratory for National ICT Australia (NICTA).
NICTA is dedicated to research and development in information and communications technology (ICT). The new Kensington laboratory is named in honour of its founding Chairman, Neville Roach, and is an important addition to NICTA's national research facilities.
UNSW, as a founding member of NICTA, and a leader in IT research and teaching, will work closely with NICTA on cutting-edge research projects. NICTA is funded by the Australian Government's Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts and the Australian Research Council.
The new building on Anzac Parade, completed in June this year, also houses UNSW's Foundation Studies and the UNSW Institute of Languages Department of English for Academic Purposes, and includes some 60 classrooms. It won the Outstanding Construction Award and the Best Educational Building above $25 million at this year's Master Builders Association of NSW awards.
Also opened this week on Anzac Parade was the UNSW Foundation Year Residential College. The Governor of NSW, Professor Marie Bashir, opened the building. Managed by Unilodge, the college houses more than 230 students undertaking the 40-week pre-university course.
