The University of New South Wales has announced the appointment of Professor Greg Whittred as the first President of UNSW Asia.
Professor Whittred is the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics at UNSW in Sydney, one of the leading business faculties in the Asian region. He will take up the new position next month, and relocate to Singapore in 2006.
Making the announcement in Singapore, UNSW Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Wainwright said it was a significant appointment and a key milestone in the development of UNSW Asia.
“Professor Whittred has the ideal credentials to lead UNSW Asia as its inaugural President,” Professor Wainwright said.
“He is one of the University’s most distinguished business academics, has been at the forefront of our engagement with Asia and brings a wealth of management and leadership experience to the role.
“Professor Whittred has a passionate vision for UNSW Asia and will build on the tremendous work that has been done to date to establish this new university,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
“I would particularly like to pay tribute to the outstanding contribution made by Professor John Ingleson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International & Development) and Ms Jennie Lang, Executive Director of UNSW International, in the establishment process.”
Professor Whittred’s appointment follows an extensive international search and selection process.
“I am honoured to be given this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Professor Whittred said.
“UNSW Asia is a truly groundbreaking initiative. Not only is it Singapore’s first private university, it is the first comprehensive research and teaching institution to be established overseas by an Australian university.
“Our objective is to build an innovative institution that is student-centred, industry relevant and research intensive. The academic model is cross-disciplinary, while the links between UNSW in Sydney and UNSW Asia will help remove barriers between Australia and Asia. The dissolving of boundaries and borders in all senses is what we are setting out to achieve.
“UNSW is proud to be working with the Singapore Government to help realise its vision of developing a hub of education excellence in the region,” Professor Whittred said.
Congratulating Professor Whittred on his appointment, Mr Ko Kheng Hwa, Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board said, "We are happy to welcome Professor Whittred to Singapore. He is not new to Singapore, having previously held a Visiting Professorship at the National University of Singapore. With his commitment to UNSW Asia, distinguished academic credentials and extensive linkage with Singapore and Asia, Professor Whittred will be instrumental to the success of UNSW Asia.
“We look forward to working closely with him and his team to realise our shared vision for UNSW Asia. With the first intake of students in 2007, UNSW Asia is a key partner in our Global Schoolhouse programme and it will be a tremendous boost to the growing ecosystem of leading universities that have a significant presence in Singapore,” he said.
Professor Whittred is a Professor of Accounting and has been Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics since 2002. In that time he has expanded relationships with leading business schools in the Asian region and worked closely with the Faculty’s extensive network of alumni to strengthen links with industry.
Professor Whittred has a commerce degree from the University of Queensland, a Masters in Economics from the University of Sydney and a PhD in accounting and finance from UNSW. Previous Professorial appointments include the University of Sydney and the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM), where he was Director of the Executive MBA Program, Associate Dean of MBA Programs, and Acting Dean.
Visiting Professorships include the Graduate Schools of Business at Universities of Chicago, Rochester, Manchester, China-Europe International Business School, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, National University of Singapore and University of Queensland.
UNSW was invited by the Singapore Government in 2004 to establish the country’s first foreign university. Opening in 2007, UNSW Asia will offer a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs and will establish an international benchmark for transnational education.
