New NHMRC grants

12 October 2005

Professor Caroline Finch
UNSW has secured almost $12 million in grants in the latest round of funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Seventeen project grants, six research fellowships and three career development awards will be given to the University, starting in 2006.

Over one million dollars of the new funding has been awarded to a team that is looking at whether exercise programs can prevent knee injuries. Professor Caroline Finch of the Injury Risk Management Research Centre leads the team.

A project grant of $630,000 has been awarded to a team that will investigate whether sexually transmitted infections increase the risk of HIV infection. The team is led by Associate Professor Andrew Grulich from the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research.

Professors Philip Hogg and Roland Stocker, both of whom are based at the Centre for Vascular Research (CVR), will each receive research fellowships of $782,500 for five years, in addition to project grants.

Dr Kay Double, who is based at the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute, has won a research fellowship and is leading a team that won a project grant to look at possible causes of brain cell death in Parkinson's disease.

Professor Ric Day, who is based at St Vincent's Hospital, is a member of two research teams, which together were awarded more than a million dollars worth of funding.

A number of conjoint appointments at UNSW, who are based at other institutions, have also been successful in this round of funding.
