UNSW student Julia Sungyon Hong has been awarded a trip to Japan after taking first prize in the open beginners division of the 2006 National Japanese Language Speech Contest.

Julia’s speech, entitled ‘Culture shock – Learning from differences’, drew on her experience growing up in Korea and then moving to New Zealand and Australia to study. She discussed the cultural differences and how this had challenged and expanded her perspective. Julia is studying Japanese Communication in the School of Modern Language Studies.

UNSW's Professor Chihiro Kinoshita Thomson, who served as the Chief Judge for the National Final, congratulated not only Julia but all lecturers and students in the Japanese Studies program who have produced outstanding results in the speech contests over the years.

“Our students and lecturers have contributed in small but significant ways to build a healthy relationship between Australia and Japan,” says Professor Thomson. “Our participation in the speech contest is one such example.”

Held annually by the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation, the Japanese Language Speech Contest has been running since 1969. The contest is open to university students studying Japanese as a second language.

This is the Australia-Japan Year of Exchange, marking the 30th anniversary of the 1976 Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the two countries.
