MEDIA, NEWS & EVENTSGarrett helps legal centre turn 2510 November 2006
Labor MP and University of New South Wales (UNSW) law graduate Peter Garrett will launch Kingsford Legal Centre’s (KLC) 25th anniversary celebrations on Friday 10 November. Garrett, along with other speakers, will discuss the major milestones of UNSW’s community legal centre. These include KLC’s groundbreaking work in the areas of discrimination and employment law. “In the past 25 years the centre’s test cases, such as Hope v NIB or Cetin, have changed and expanded the law for the better,” says KLC Director, Anna Cody. KLC runs both a legal education program for UNSW’s law students, provides services on a statewide and local basis, and undertakes education, policy and campaign work to promote equality of access to the legal system in Australia. ‘We are the only university in Australia to provide EVERY law student with hands on experience in interviewing real clients,” says Cody. “KLC has helped thousands of students to think critically about how the legal system functions.” The Centre has recently expanded with the opening of two community outreach services to increase access. These have been set up in Maroubra and in Eastlakes Shopping Centre. The 25th anniversary celebrations will also see the launch of a new book, From the Roundabout to the Roundhouse – 25 years of Kingsford legal centre, by University of Melbourne historian David Nichols.
