The most powerful public servant in Australia and a former academic at UNSW, Dr Peter Shergold, has given an insight into the engine room of Federal Government in the final Meet the CEO event of 2006.
Dr Shergold, Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, told an audience of over 300 alumni and friends of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and the AGSM that he relishes the opportunity to make a difference and to bring about social change.
Dr Shergold spoke about serving governments from opposite ends of the political spectrum and what he described as his commitment to driving strong public policy.
A former lecturer in economic history at UNSW, Peter Shergold was recruited by the Hawke Government to head the newly-formed Office of Multicultural Affairs. Since then, he has headed several government departments, including the Office of Indigenous Affairs for the Keating Government.
On working with Prime Ministers as different as Paul Keating and John Howard, Dr Shergold said that it is imperative for the public service to provide “frank and fearless” policy advice, but that this must be in response to the directives set.
Dr Shergold was interviewed by AFR BOSS magazine’s Helen Trinca at the event. This follows two other events in 2006 with guest speakers Steven Lowy of Westfield and David Morgan of Westpac.
Meet the CEO is an initiative of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics’ Advisory Board and is generously sponsored by Deloitte.
