Australia - more than a nosey neighbour?

20 October 2006

Ingram Colloquium on International Law and Development

Australia’s increasingly interventionist and security-orientated regional engagement is starting to generate resentment and opposition from its neighbours, according to research presented today (20 October) UNSW.

Dr Sinclair Dinnen, Senior Fellow from the Australian National University, presented his paper ‘Security and Development – Australia in the Pacific’ at the Ingram Colloquium on International Law and Development organised by UNSW’s Faculty of Law.

Other issues discussed at the Colloquium included:

Climate Change: ‘Climate change and the Clean Development Mechanism’ (Kyoto Protocol) Ms Monique Willis, Baker & McKenzie, Sydney

Free Trade: ‘Trade in agriculture and the Cairns group: promoting economic and social development in developing countries’; Ms Gillian Moon, UNSW Faculty of Law

Australian Aid: ‘Australia’s role in development’; Scott Dawson, AusAid

Global Poverty: ‘Australia’s role in addressing poverty globally’ (the upcoming G20 summit); James Ensor, Oxfam Australia

The Colloquium is a forum for debate on current issues of international law and development, and for discussion of Australia’s role in global legal regimes. It is named after Mr James Ingram, former Australian diplomat and former Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program.
