Two UNSW research students have made a clean sweep of the Ralph Reader Young Investigator Awards of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.
The award has two sections, clinical and basic science.
The basic science prize was awarded to 33-year-old Dr Ravinay Bhindi, who is based at the Centre for Vascular Research (CVR), for his work using a new class of experimental drug.
“My work shows that heart muscle damage is reduced by half, if the drug is used after a heart attack,” he said. Dr Bhindi’s paper was published in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

| Dr Yishay Orr |
Dr Yishay Orr, who is based at the CVR and is completing her PhD, won the clinical section for her work that highlights the novel characteristics of how white blood cells become activated in the body during cardiac surgery.
The research could lead to the development of new anti-inflammatory drugs to combat the process, which can contribute to problems after surgery.
The work has been submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
