UNSW has formalised its affiliation with the Whitlam Joint Replacement Centre (WJRC) at Fairfield Hospital.

The Centre’s patron, Former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, joined the Dean of Medicine, Professor Peter Smith, to celebrate the research link.

The Centre, which is part of the Sydney South West Area Health Service (SSWAHS), performs up to 400 joint replacement procedures each year. It is a collaboration of all healthcare professionals involved in arthritis management and joint replacement surgery in the western zone of the SSWAHS.

“The Whitlam Joint Replacement Centre has a short but distinguished history of research,” said Professor Smith. “Formal relationships with clinical and research groups in south west Sydney bring benefits to both the University and the clinicians involved.”

The Chair of the WJRC, Dr John Ireland said: “The opportunity for new staff to be offered a conjoint academic appointment with a university of the calibre of UNSW provides the Centre with an opportunity to continue attracting staff of the highest quality.”
