Fruits of his labour

11 October 2007

Toby McInnes
Final year Industrial Design student Toby McInnes has been awarded the prestigious 2007 Breville Young Design Award.

Toby, a student in the Faculty of the Built Environment, was awarded the John O’Brien Scholarship for his Breville Fruit Bowl concept.

The competition invited final-year industrial design students to design an accessory which complements a current Breville appliance. Toby’s fruit bowl design ripens fruit and maintains the fruits freshness and is intended to be a companion device to Breville juicers and food processors.

As part of the award, Toby will join Breville’s award-winning design team for a 12-month internship.

Speaking of Breville’s initiative Toby said: ‘They’re an Australian company and they are in it for the right reasons. It’s great to know that when I finish my degree I’ll walk into a job with them.”

According to Richard Hoare, Breville’s Director of Design and Innovation, this year’s competition was fierce, with outstanding designs submitted by students from a range of leading universities.

Applicants were assessed on criteria such as design, innovation and marketability.

“As an Australian brand, renowned for design and innovation, we strongly believe in the importance of developing young Australian design talent,” said Mr Hoare.
