Will the world be free of HIV?

High court judge, Justice Michael Kirby, will convene a high-level forum on the future of HIV/AIDS this week.

Pre-eminent researchers in HIV/AIDS will make public the latest research on the global health crisis from a scientific, human rights and behavioural perspective.

The event will be held at UNSW this Wednesday (30th April).

One of the world’s best-known HIV researchers, UNSW Professor David Cooper, the Director of the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research (NCHECR) will speak about improved treatment and the quest for a vaccine.

UNSW Professor Daniel Tarantola will speak about the social and human rights implications of HIV. Professor Tarantola is now focused on an academic career in HIV/AIDS, after a stellar clinical career during which he helped establish the world-renowned Medecins Sans Frontieres and oversaw the eradication of smallpox.

Behavioural aspects of the epidemic will be addressed by UNSW Associate Professor Juliet Richters. Throughout her 20 years in research, Professor Richters has looked at family planning and condom use as well as all types of sexual practices.
