Academic Board farewelled Sid Gray, Dennis Lincoln, Bill Purcell and
Michael Walpole. We thanked Lynda Ho, who has served as Acting Executive
Officer, Academic Board for the first half of 2003, and we welcomed Rhona
Fraser, as Deputy Head, Secretariat Services and Executive Officer, Academic
Board. We also welcomed Rae Dufty, Ardrian Hardjono, Powen Hwang and
Alexandra McCosker, who are the new student members, Geoff Dick and Ken
Trotman, who are filling vacancies in elected membership and Lesley
Hitchens, who has taken on the role of Presiding Member, Faculty of Law.
We approved new guidelines for UNSW Centres, and noted that these
guidelines replace all those that have been in place in the past. These
guidelines underscore that the University establishes centres to encourage
research, teaching and/or community service in areas not readily covered by
individual schools and faculties. Most centres concentrate on multidisciplinary
fields and bring together cognate groups of academics across
different schools and/or faculties. The University limits the use of the title
Centre to those that have been approved by the processes covered in these
guidelines. Research centres focus on research activities. Program centres can
be established to provide a focus for more significant involvement in multidisciplinary
teaching activities than is the case for research centres. The role
and function of centres vary across the disciplines. For example, while a
centre in science may be large in scale and have considerable external
funding, a centre in the humanities may be small and require few resources,
providing a platform for the development of interdisciplinary research. The
key criterion is that a centre adds value to the University’s research and/or
educational mission beyond that which would accrue from the normal
conduct of its members’ duties.
Academic Board also received two significant reports. One came from
the Postgraduate Coursework Committee and provided important
information and recommendations concerning postgraduate coursework
infrastructure. The other came from the Academic Services Committee and
provided valuable comment on and recommendations about teaching and
learning space on the UNSW Kensington campus.
We noted these reports and asked Adrian Lee (Pro-Vice-Chancellor,
Education and Quality Improvement) to report to the November 2003
meeting of Academic Board on the implications and implementation of the
recommendations contained in the reports.
We received a presentation from Adrian Lee about the use of WebCT
Vista in educational delivery; we approved the revised Academic Board
electorates (following the restructure of Schools at University College,
ADFA) which will be used for the elections in 2004; and we noted the
Annual Reports from the Committee on Research and the Academic
Services Committee.
If there are issues that you would like Academic Board or its Committees
to consider, or if you would like to attend a meeting, please let me know via
k.mcconkey@unsw.edu.au or Ph 9385 2393.
Kevin McConkey is president of the Academic Board. |
