Neuroscientist wins Australasian Science prize
Emeritus Scientia Professor Mark Rowe has won the Australasian Science prize, the first medical scientist to be given the award.

Rowe has been described as Australia’s most distinguished sensory neuroscientist. His work has led to the identification of the brain regions involved in processing tactile information and has revealed the ways in which that information is coded in the impulse patterns of brain cells.

He retired recently after more than 30 years in the school of physiology and pharmacology and currently holds a conjoint chair in physiology.

Stupendo! Italian MOU
The faculty of engineering and Italy’s Campania region have signed an agreement to promote collaborative research projects and staff and student exchanges.

The first collaborative project under the MOU, signed last month, is in health telematics. The MOU allows for research projects and exchanges in all of the faculty’s other schools.

“We actively sought closer ties with Italy, where I believe our researchers have a wonderful opportunity to widen the pool of ideas,” said engineering dean, Professor Brendon Parker. “We aim to engage in joint publications of scientific papers, support the development of educational resources and promote joint conferences and workshops.”

Architecture student shares RAIA award
UNSW architecture student Lawson Katiza is one of two winners of the

2003 Royal Australian Institute of Architects national student prize for the advancement of architecture.

Katiza developed an award-winning website Dzimba Dzemabwe-Houses of Stone (http://dzimbabwe.members.easyspace.com) which traces the progress of Zimbabwean architecture through the country’s significant buildings.

Sustainable Living expo
Innovations, eco-solutions and educational projects produced by Australia’s youth in 2003 will be on show at the Sustainable Living competition expo and award ceremony, to be held at UNSW on Friday December 5.

The competition attracts more than 1,000 entries from high schools around the country and is the largest event of its kind in Australia.

Dean of the faculty of the built environment, Professor Peter Murphy, says finding ways to construct the built environment in an ecologically sustainable fashion is a major priority for educators and professionals.

UNSW takes out judo challenge
A capacity crowd at the UNSW Roundhouse saw the home team win the fifth University Judo Challenge against the University of Sydney last month.

Boasting several national champions and international representatives, Australia’s two premier Judo universities went into the night with some notable absences from both teams.
The fate of the encounter was in the balance until the twelfth fight, when Andre Aravena won the deciding bout with a shoulder throw on veteran Ken McAviney.
