Andrew Walters<br/>Vice-President, Finance and Operations

Andrew Walters is the Vice-President, Finance and Operations, at UNSW Sydney, having commenced in August 2015.

Prior to this appointment, Andrew was Chief Financial Officer at Deakin University in Victoria for nine years. He was responsible for the effective management of finance, investments and enterprise projects at Deakin University.

Prior to Deakin, Andrew was the Group Finance Director of a publicly listed holding company with a diverse set of investments and was responsible for restoring profitability and investor confidence. He has extensive experience in the mining industry as Chief Financial Officer of the Botswana operations of diamond mining company DeBeers.

Andrew holds degrees in commerce and accounting and is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. He has extensive experience operating on boards of directors both in an executive and non-executive capacity across a large range of businesses. He is currently a UNSW representative director on the UNSW Global Ltd Board.

The Division of Finance and Operations was established in January 2009. Key responsibilities in the portfolio are Finance, UNSW IT, Estate Management, Business & Campus Services, Internal Audit and UNSW Planning & Performance.

Ashley joined the Office of the VP Finance and Operations in October 2016 and is responsible for providing executive support and advice to the Vice-President on all strategic and operational matters arising across the Division of Finance and Operations.


Prior to this role, Ashley held several managerial positions within UNSW in the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Education Portfolio, UNSW Library and the Graduations Department.


Ashley holds a Bachelor Degree in Business and Marketing and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Relations and Event Management.

Jeff joined UNSW in May 2017 as the Executive Director of Estate Management and in January 2019 he has been appointed Deputy Vice-President, Finance & Operations.


Jeff has held a variety of roles over the last 25 years with Lend Lease and AMP Capital, with experience predominantly in Australia, but brings considerable knowledge of international markets having worked in Europe for 10 years and exploring opportunities in China and Japan. More recently Jeff has been focussed on mixed use developments in Sydney and has extensive relationships with the NSW Government and local Councils such as the City of Sydney.


Jeff holds a Bachelor of Applied Science ((Honours (Quantity Surveying) and a Post Graduate Diploma (Applied Finance & Investment).

The Director of Business & Campus Services (BACS) has overall responsibility for the university’s student accommodation portfolio as well as Property & Retail, Venues & Events, Hospitality, Sports and Recreation Centre and Commercial Decision Support. In this capacity Stephen manages these business operations, embeds service standards, pursues related commercial opportunities and provides strategic guidance to aid decision-making. Stephen also supports a campus experience that is accessible, sustainable and socially beneficial thereby enabling students and staff to realise their full potential.


Prior to joining UNSW, Stephen gained valuable experience in a number of industries including Tourism, Logistics, Audit, Transport and Finance. He has a Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy and Management), a Masters of Business Administration, and is a Chartered Accountant, Fellow of CPA Australia and a Member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators.

The Internal Audit function works with the management and staff of the University to add value and improve the University's operations by systematically evaluating and improving the effectiveness of its risk management, control and governance processes. It operates as an independent and objective service that monitors the performance quality and effectiveness of these processes which are essential for the University to achieve its strategy.


Prior to joining UNSW, Lis was a Director at PwC working with clients in the retail, government and higher education sectors as well as working at Woolworths Ltd in Internal Audit and Business Strategy. Lis was also a Sessional Lecturer at UNSW and Macquarie University for many years. She is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

UNSW Planning & Performance builds capability in key areas of business intelligence and planning based on the reliable and robust data we manage through our ownership of the enterprise data warehouse, Information Hub, and Data and Information Governance. Planning & Performance provides management reports, business intelligence, analysis and strategic advice to multiple stakeholders across the University; and reports to the Australian Government and other statutory bodies. Planning & Performance is a key resource for the senior management of the University, providing data, management information and analysis of performance reporting.
