Dr Ann Kayis-Kumar

Dr Ann Kayis-Kumar is Deputy President of the Academic Board. She has held this position since October 2020 and has represented the UNSW Business School on the Academic Board since January 2017. She is Chair of the Academic Board Program Review Committee and Deputy Chair of the Academic Board Programs Committee and University Academic Quality Committee.

Ann is an Associate Professor in the School of Taxation & Business Law (incorporating Atax) and Founding Director of UNSW Tax Clinic, which provides free, independent and confidential tax advice and support to financially vulnerable individuals and small businesses across Australia.

Ann is recognised nationally and internationally for her scholarship in tax policy. Her research conceptualises tax as a mechanism to achieve social justice across the taxpaying spectrum; ranging from improving the integrity of taxing multinationals to improving the wellbeing of financially vulnerable individuals and small businesses. She is author of Taxing Multinationals (Oxford University Press, 2019) which applies a combination of economic theory, legal research and optimisation modelling. This research is internationally recognised in academia and industry for pioneering the most sophisticated simulation of multinationals’ tax minimising behavioural responses. As Founding Director of UNSW Tax Clinic, Ann created Australia’s first tax clinic specialist course and leads strategic research teams including with the Centre for Social Impact, the Black Dog Institute and the Gendered Violence Research Network to engage in breakthrough, grassroots research. She has presented her research at conferences including at Oxford University and the University of Cambridge and is regularly an invited panelist at tax policy summits including ANU’s National Tax Summit (on the Corporate Taxation Panel alongside Ken Henry AC) and the Tax Institute’s Tax Summit.

She is Vice-President of the Australasian Tax Teachers’ Association, and also serves on industry-level committees including The Tax Institute’s NSW Technical Committee and SME & Tax Practitioner Committee.
