Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Actuarial studies/ Accounting

UNSW Business School not only offers you technical training through your degree but also provides a variety of extra-curricular programs to exercise your soft skills, says alumna Estelle Liu.

“Those technical skills, that are essential to employment,” she said.

During her time at UNSW Sydney the Bachelor of Commerce graduate took part in the Professional Development Program, which is designed for international students. Through the program, Estelle was offered an internship from the Confucius Institute.

The program covers workplace communication skills, recruitment tips and Australian employer expectations. The program also provides international students the opportunity to gain essential workplace skills through a 50-hour practical workplace experience.

“It helped me gain employment by giving me the opportunity to learn about the working culture in Australia and also gave me the training for interview skills, writing skills.”

Estelle emphasised that working part-time throughout your degree was important.

One of her part-time roles whilst studying was an academic tutor at UNSW for two actuarial courses.

“The soft skills I gained from this experience helped me gain further employment in Australia.”

Estelle’s UNSW Business School degree has taken her to her current role as a consultant in an Actuarial consulting firm.

“I now specialise in providing advice to superannuation funds on their investment and retirement matters,” she said.
