It’s time to get involved with the UNSW Tax Clinic, a free service for financially vulnerable individuals and small businesses who would otherwise not have access to tax advice and support.

Consisting of a clinical component (1 full day per week) and a skills-based webinar component (1.5 hours per fortnight), you will be supervised and mentored by our team of Clinical Supervisors, undertake work for real clients and analyse the effect of the tax system in practice.

You’ll also design and deliver community rights-based education initiatives, and assist with research and advocacy to address systemic injustice within the tax-transfer system.

This practical experience is supported by fortnightly webinars designed to help you further develop your professional skills, advance your tax technical knowledge on ‘hot topics’, and allow for reflection of your experiences.

The UNSW Tax Clinic is available to enrolled students (TABL3033/5933) at UNSW Business School.

  • Places are limited and only offered on a competitive Expression of Interest (EOI) process.

Please ensure you meet the Eligibility Criteria before submitting your application.

You will be called in for an interview round if you are shortlisted. After the interviews, the selection committee will advise you of the outcome of your application via your student email account.

InPlace is UNSW’s new enterprise wide platform for managing Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experiences for UNSW students across all schools and faculties. The Tax Clinic will be using InPlace to track and manage all Placements. The first step in this process is for a student to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in InPlace for a Tax Clinic Placement.

InPlace can be accessed via https://placements.unsw.edu.au by simply entering your zID and zPass. When you first access InPlace a ‘Quick Tour’ is also available to assist you with basic navigation.

Please follow the steps below to submit an EOI for the Tax Clinic once you have logged into InPlace.

    • Go into your 'My Details' section under your username to update the 'Tax Clinic - Expression of Interest for Enrolment' section (please note, complete each section and hit 'Submit')
    • You can also access this section via the 'To Do' section of your Home page
    • Once all sections are completed and submitted, this will be passed on to UNSW Staff for review
    • You will be advised of the outcome but can also check InPlace for progress on the EOI and any future Placements
    • You will be able to view any 'Confirmed' Placements in InPlace and complete further information as needed

Student testimonials

Thank you once again for the meaningful opportunity to be part of the clinic. I believe the practical experience, skills and mentorship I gained have successfully landed me a graduate role as a Tax Consultant within the Financial Advisory division at PwC Australia. I hope the clinic continues to prosper with more success stories as well as improving social justice outcomes in the community.

-Ayu (TABL3033, T2 2019)

This course has definitely improved my knowledge on not just the academic aspect of tax-related topics, but also my practical skills when working with clients in the future. Thanks to this course, I am certain I want to pursue a career in taxation.
