Social Entrepreneurship Practicum (COMM3030)

COMM3030 Social Entrepreneurship Practicum is a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course designed to integrate theory with experiential practice and involve authentic and purposeful engagement with partner organisations. It enables undergraduate students to develop professional skills while working in a team on a real social entrepreneurship project.

Students work with partners from industry, social enterprises, not-for-profits and foundations to develop and conduct a variety of applied projects in different areas of social entrepreneurship. In doing so, they have the opportunity to develop their professional skills, including critical thinking, communication, teamwork, research, innovation and creativity, entrepreneurship, leadership and many others.

In each teaching session, projects may be offered from the following fields:

  • Social entrepreneurship and social innovation
  • Philanthropy
  • Impact investing
  • Business and human rights
  • Corporate social responsibility
  • Pro bono and volunteering
  • Measuring social impact
  • Collective impact
  • Social finance
  • Other related fields

Students may be involved in business plan development, research and policy work, financial modelling, impact investment deal sourcing and due diligence, marketing, writing, advocacy, advising, strategising and related activities. Students will critically analyse the role of social entrepreneurs, as well as businesses, foundations, not-for-profits and investors.

COMM3030 Social Entrepreneurship Practicum runs during T1, T2 and T3. Students are able to select their preference for which day(s) of the week they are available for project work.

COMM3030 is available to UNSW undergraduate students enrolled in a single or dual Commerce, Economics, Actuarial Studies or Information Systems program who have met the following eligibility:

  • have an average minimum WAM of 65 or above
  • have completed a minimum of 48 UOC at the commencement of this course
  • are in good academic standing
  • have room in their degree for this course
  • have completed Career Accelerator: Essentials (login using student-enrolment key: Career_Accelerator) OR COMM1999 myBCom First Year Portfolio

  • have an up-to-date LinkedIn profile with professional photo

This course may count as a UNSW Business School free elective OR as a major elective within some schools. It is recommended you complete a progression check prior to enrolling.

COMM3030 is also a General Education course for students from other Faculties.
