Xiaopeng Li

Senior Lecturer

Dr Xiaopeng Li is currently a Senior Lecturer and Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow in the School Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at UNSW Sydney, leading a research group working on additive manufacturing and advanced materials research. He received his PhD degree in Materials Engineering from The University of Queensland, Australia in 2013, where his PhD thesis won the Best Thesis Award by Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals in 2013. After his PhD, he joined The University of Western Australia as an Assistant Professor, working on additive manufacturing of metallic glasses, light alloys and their composites till 2016. Following this, he joined one of the world-famous additive manufacturing groups led by Prof Jean-Pierre Kruth in KU Leuven, Belgium as a Research Fellow till 2017. In 2020, Dr Li is listed as World’s Top 2% Scientists in Materials & Applied Physics & Enabling Strategic Technologies (single year in 2019) in the database of the most-cited scientists developed at Stanford University.

  • Development of various materials for additive manufacturing;
  • Design and simulation for additive manufacturing, e.g. final parts production with improved functional part characteristics;
  • Processing-microstructure-property relationship in additive manufacturing;
  • Hybrid additive manufacturing;
  • Advanced materials and structures.

Research collaborations:

Dr Xiaopeng Li collaborates with a number of active researchers from UNSW, The University of Queensland, The University of Sydney, The University of Western Australia, RMIT University, CSIRO and Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). Internationally he also collaborates with Stanford University (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA), KU Leuven (Belgium), The National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS, France), Osaka University (Japan) and Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).

Our group now has PhD openings for high-caliber and highly motivated students who are interested in pursuing their PhD in additive manufacturing and advanced materials research. Students with a strong background in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials science and engineering, applied physics or other related fields are encouraged to apply.
