Description of field of research

This project will investigate the possibility of developing an ultrasound-guided robot for spinal injections. The main difficulties in this project lie in analysing ultrasound images to provide useful information for the robotic injection. The alignment of the ultrasound system with the robot system is also critical for the accuracy of injection that can be achieved. Highly self-motivated students with strong hands-on skills in image processing, robotics, and/or programming are encouraged to apply. Students do not need to have a biomedical background; students from other schools are also welcome to apply.

Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

Research Area

Image processing | Robotics | Mechatronics | Programming

This project is in collaboration with the St George Hospital, Xuanwu Hospital, and UTS. The student will be guided by senior research staff and able to access facilities in the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine.

The expected outcomes of the project include:

  • algorithms for ultrasound image processing;
  • integration of an ultrasound system with a robot system;
  • validation of the system.
