In this talk Scientia Professor Matthew England will give an overview of the kinds of tools we have at our disposal for understanding climate processes and climate dynamics, spanning observations, reanalysis products, field campaigns, models, theory and other methods. The particular example of ocean and ocean-ice-atmosphere processes around the Antarctic margin will be used to demonstrate how advances can be made even in regions with few data and inadequate models.
