Biomedical Education in the School of Biomedical Sciences brings together a community of experts with a passion for higher education, innovation, scholarship in learning and teaching (SoTL) and research into pedagogy within and beyond their discipline.
In recent years, the university classroom has transformed, not least in response to the pandemic and a global community of learners moving online. The Biomedical Educational Research and Development group is focused on state-of-the art design, development, delivery and evaluation of education practice and pedagogy.
Approaches include implementation of innovative digital learning tools, adaptive and immersive online environments and assessment strategies. The effect(s) of these approaches upon student learning outcomes and experience across a range of learning environments such as fully online, blended, hybrid/hyflex and face-to-face are fundamental to our educative processes. Investigations into the effectiveness of these approaches is carried out by staff across the disciplines of School of Biomedical Sciences, as well as students engaged in PhD, Masters and Honours Projects.
Outcomes of these approaches have been successfully incorporated into current teaching practice within the school, including virtual microscopy-based online tutorials and virtual laboratories in pathology, and innovative teaching media and strategies in the teaching of neuroanatomy and gross anatomy.
