This webinar brings together data from a series of studies exploring illicit alcohol sold via Australia's retail market. Drawing on store audits across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, and chemical testing of a sample of illicit products, this webinar highlights the prevalence of illicit alcohol in the retail market, contaminants found in illicit alcohol sold through retail channels and methods to identify illicit alcohol in stores.

About the speaker:

Dr Michala Kowalski is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre. Her research program includes mixed-methods studies of drug and alcohol policy, with a particular interest in policymaking processes and policy evaluations. In collaboration with Dr Nic Taylor from the National Drug Research Institute, she has pioneered research into the illicit alcohol market in Australia. Michala is a member of the Drug Policy Modelling Program Network and the Global Cannabis Cultivation Research Consortium.

About the panellists:

Dr Michael Livingston is an Associate Professor at the National Drug Research Institute. He has previously worked at the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research and the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre and has a long history of research on alcohol policy and epidemiology. His work focusses on the impact of alcohol policy changes and general trends in alcohol consumption and harm, with a particular emphasis on youth drinking patterns.

Dr Nic Taylor is an alcohol policy researcher at the National Drug Research Institute. His work involves the use of epidemiological data to monitor alcohol consumption trends across Australia and tracking trends in alcohol-related harm. His program of work includes monitoring trends in youth drinking, evaluating the impact of alcohol restrictions on violence and vibrancy in nightlife settings, and evaluating the impact on the Northern Territory’s minimum unit price on consumption, consumers and harm.
