The Drug Policy Modelling Program Research Symposium will run from 10 - 4pm, with registration open from 9:45am. Catering will be provided. RSVPs are essential by 31 May 2013: colleen.faes@unsw.edu.au
Presentations at the symposium will include:
- Professor Alison Ritter will launch research on Australian government spending on drugs. This work will outline new estimates of the proportion of expenditure on drug treatment, drug law enforcement, harm reduction and prevention and be the first time new national estimates are provided since 2002/2003.
- A panel discussing developing a new National Opioid Overdose Strategy will be held, sponsored by the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Association ACT (ATODA). With overdose deaths seemingly rising and significant developments in overdose prevention and management, effective and coordinated responses to prevent death and injury are required.
- Caitlin Hughes and Nicholas Cowdery will speak about the issue of Deemed supply in Australian drug trafficking laws; describing the uniqueness of the deemed supply provisions (against international drug trafficking and other Australian serious crime provisions), policy implications and alternatives.
For the full program, please see the 'further info' link at the bottom of this page.
For those unfamiliar with DPMP, the program aims to improve Australian drug policy through three key activities:
- generating new research evidence
- providing tools for policy makers to better use research evidence
- studying how policy actually gets made
