Around the world the consumption of opioid analgesics has been increasing, yet millions of people still die in pain every year, including children, mostly in poor countries, but also in rural areas in developed countries. Observing the trends in use of these medications is relevant to determine which medicines are being used and if the international market is distributing mostly newer and less affordable formulations, to determine any changes in the regional patterns of use of specific opioids over time, and to identify impediments to availability and access of patients to proper treatment in different regions and countries.

About the speaker

Juliana Erthal-Williamson is a PhD candidate at NDARC researching global changes in opioid medicine production and availability. Her latest publications include ‘Hot Topic: Global Trends in the Use of Opioid Analgesics’ (Current Addictions Report, 2019) and an upcoming paper on availability in the Eastern Mediterranean region. She holds a Master’s degree in Political Science, a Bachelor’s in Social Science, and has worked at the Secretariat of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) since 2014. Prior to that she worked at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and she has also worked for the European Parliament and the South American Political Observatory (OPSA).
