In 2016, the US Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released guidelines for opioid management, calling for a decrease in opioid prescribing in light of increasing opioid overdoses. Following the release of these guidelines and other policies to restrict inappropriate prescribing, many patients expressed concern that they were losing access to providers to manage their long-standing pain. In this webinar, Dr Pooja Lagisetty will present the methods and results of a series of audit, commonly known as "secret shopper" studies, that were used to assess access to care.

About the speaker:

Dr Pooja Lagisetty is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School and a research scientist at the Center for Clinical Management and Research at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. She is also the Co-Director of Research and Data Innovation in the University of Michigan Opioid Research Institute and Advance Fellowship in Addiction Research at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. Dr Lagisetty completed her medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, her internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and her master’s degree via the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Michigan.

She is clinically boarded in both Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine and cares for veterans within the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. Her research has been influential in understanding stigma and disparities for individuals with pain and addiction, comparing the effectiveness of treatments for opioid use disorder, and evaluating effects of opioid-related policy. Dr Lagisetty's team’s research has been funded by several agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA).
