References to substance use are prevalent in popular media, including social media, films, and music. With the rise of smart devices and the internet, media consumption has increased, likely leading to more exposure to media portrayals of substance use. In this seminar, we will explore the following topics:

1) how substance use is depicted in the media and what we can learn about substance-related phenomena (e.g., social media responses to policy change)

2) the potential impact of exposure to these depictions

3) opportunities for intervention and prevention.

About the speaker

Dr Riordan is an ARC DECRA Research Fellow at La Trobe University’s Centre for Alcohol Policy Research. His research focuses on using new and emerging technologies to understand and intervene with people who drink alcohol. He currently leads CAPR’s stream of research focusing on “alcohol, media, and emerging technologies” and its aims to use emerging technology to better understand the link between exposure to alcohol use in the media and alcohol use.
