Wastewater Indicators of Antibiotic-resistance in the Community
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global threat with the potential of once-treatable infections becoming untreatable. To preserve antimicrobials, both the global and local authorities, the World Health Organization and the Australian Commission of Quality and Safety in Health Care, recognise that it is imperative to start monitoring AMR in the general community. Monitoring trends in priority pathogens in the general community is, however, a methodological challenge. Mass-population monitoring for a variety of biomarkers, including illicit drugs, using untreated samples from wastewater (WW) treatment plants (WWTPs) has been shown to provide representative samples of the general community. Hence, the research goal is to establish wastewater as a monitoring tool for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the general community on a regional and national scale. Wastewater influents samples around Sydney will be tested for multi-drug resistance bacterial pathogens to monitor the prevalence and any spatial-temporal patterns of AMR and to understand better how demographic, environmental and biological parameters may influence the emergence and spread of AMR in the community.
