Mr Md. Shahruk Nur-A-Tomal
PhD in Materials Science and Engineering
Md. Shahruk Nur-A-Tomal is passionate about environmental sustainability. His main research interest is transforming waste materials or by-products into value-added products. He has experience in various advanced characterisation tools materials (mainly polymer) processing instruments. He is also experienced in performing life cycle assessment (LCA).
Tomal obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in 2016. He joined the SMaRT Center in 2018 as a PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering. He is the recipient of a UNSW PhD Scholarship in 2018 and a UNSW Science PhD Writing Scholarship in 2021.
His PhD research was mainly focused on developing microrecycling solutions for the conversion of waste plastics into high-quality products using available machinery in a novel combination. His developed recycling technologies have the potential to bring waste plastics back to the economy and reduce the impact of plastics on environmental, animal, and human health.
He has published several papers in high impact factor journals including the Journal of Cleaner Production and Materials Today Sustainability. He is in the final stage of submitting more journal papers. He had been awarded the Young Leather Scientist Grant in 2016 and 2019 and he is the only one that received this prestigious award twice.
