Eva Nolan investigates the recent emergence of digital biodiversity databases as a catalyst for developing a novel, ecofeminist approach to natural history drawing. Her research seeks to explore how increasingly digitally mediated methods of biodiversity data collection, such as photographs from field observation and camera traps, can enable a drawing practice rooted in an ethics of care and kinship towards more-than-human species. Focusing on the online database, Atlas of Living Australia, Nolan aims to critique empirical traditions of specimen-based observation and documentation and develop a drawing protocol that runs counter to extractive scientific practice. During the current extinction epoch, digital biodiversity monitoring plays a fundamental role in our evolving understanding of fragile ecological relationships. Nolan seeks to examine how, as changing technology enables new ways of collecting and cataloguing species, innovative approaches to drawing the natural world can also emerge.
