For the first time, the 2026 Census will ask everyone aged 16 and over about their gender and sexual orientation. We want to understand:

  • How LGBTQ+ people, and adults who live with and care for LGBTQ+ people, are likely to answer
  • Whether the Census questions reflect how people describe their gender and sexual identity
  • How privacy, disclosure, or who else is in the house might affect what’s recorded on Census night
Four people posing for the camera against a blue and yellow background.

Why is this important?

The government uses Census data to plan services, allocate funding, and make policy decisions. Accurate data is essential to make sure LGBTQ+ people are counted and our communities receive fair support and resources.

Two people pose for the camera, the second person looking at the first.

 How can you help?

The survey takes 10–15 minutes. You’ll answer a few questions about yourself, then work through scenarios based on the new Census questions. Taking part is voluntary. You can skip questions or stop at any time.

Three people are laughing together, looking towards the first person in the frame.

Is this anonymous?

Yes. We do not collect your name or contact details unless you choose to join a future follow-up study. Providing your contact details is optional. If you do, that information will be stored separately from your survey answers and you can request that they are deleted at any time by emailing LGBTQResearch@unsw.edu.au – this does not affect your survey responses, which are anonymous and can’t be withdrawn once submitted. If you ask for your contact details to be deleted, the research team will do this within five business days and send you confirmation when complete.

Who is running the study?

The study is led by a team of LGBTQ+ health researchers and community partners.
