RP3045: Living Labs Coordinator

The funded CRC LCL Living Labs are tasked with demonstrating the pathways that demonstrably reduce carbon emissions in Australia’s Built Environment. It is important to reduce duplication and better connect projects while clearly distinguishing the unique contribution of each Living Lab to new knowledge, market and societal penetration. The funded labs require a coordination role to bring their strengths to the fore and provide a focused impact for the Living Labs network facility.

The project will:

• Co-ordinate between all CRCLCL Living Labs and communicate between Living Labs to enhance research focus. Integrating and learning between Living Labs will provide a co-ordinated approach to lift the Living Lab network to societal and business impact

• Identify and package quality outputs from Living Labs which can be taken to stakeholders at all levels of government, industry and for it to be linked to the Knowledge Hub Project which is being developed separately

• Define a distinct and effective business model for the unified Living Labs facility. This role is designed to provide specific direction for the CRC LCL Living Labs facility to meet these milestones and provide business and societal impact.

Final report on CRCLCL Living Labs

The CRC LCL is involved in 17 Living Labs, now consolidated to 15, which has been the subject of a project to coordinate, manage and look to the future. During the first five years of the CRC LCL the Living Labs have been under development and there has been a significant investment by the universities with their business and societal partners. As with Living Labs globally this period has seen a significant development of the meaning and concept of the Living Lab and this has resulted in different interpretations and applications. A typology for the diverse nature of the Australian Living Labs was established and an interactive story map detailing the labs across Australia has been published on-line. In 2017 a systematic literature review of business models for Living Labs was carried out to provide a global benchmark for developing the Australian open innovation network.

Our suite of research projects across three programs includes 17 Living Labs

• We have organised the Living Labs into a typology so users can understand where knowledge can be sourced and its different uses
• We are now creating an integrated open innovation network of our 17 Living Labs to provide further opportunities for entrepreneurs, innovators and policy makers to learn and experiment
