Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The UNSW Innovation Hub tackles a broad variety of problems varying in size, complexity and subject matter.
Our projects must have a well-articulated problem statement and require a design process to reach the solution. We look for complex challenges that require a collaborative approach and can’t be addressed by a single discipline. They often involve complex, societal issues, such as mental health and climate change, and require new ways of thinking and working.

The UNSW Innovation Hub works with a wide range of disciplines and subject areas. That’s one of our greatest strengths. In today’s world, challenges like inequality, global health or responsible AI, are too complex for any single discipline to solve alone.
While we’re not the subject matter experts we specialise instead in the process of bringing people together and helping diverse teams build the trust, structure and shared purpose they need to collaborate effectively and move ideas forward.

Innovation can mean different things to different people. When we talk about innovation at the UNSW Innovation Hub, we don’t just mean new technologies, research or startups. For us, innovation is about finding new ways of working together across disciplines to create meaningful change and value for people, communities and the planet.
That might look like rethinking a process, designing a new service, adapting an old idea to a new context, or imagining entirely new ways of doing things. It’s as much about culture, collaboration and mindset as it is about the innovative outcome.

The UNSW Innovation Hub isn’t the right fit for every project.
We don’t support commercial start-ups (that’s the role of our wonderful colleagues at UNSW Founders), and we’re not focused on producing traditional research outputs. We’re not IT or technology experts; we also don’t offer grants or funding, and we don’t take on projects that already have a solution.
Our work is best suited to early-stage, complex challenges where the path forward isn’t yet clear and requires an interdisciplinary approach. We work with teams who are open to exploring the problem space, testing ideas, and embracing an iterative, design-led approach.

The UNSW Innovation Hub is a team with deep expertise in design thinking, stakeholder engagement, project management and delivery, and visual communication. Each team member plays a vital role in ensuring high-quality, tailored outcomes in our work.
