Accommodation
There are quite a few accommodation options either within walking distance (10 - 20 minutes) of UNSW, and many more which are relatively close to UNSW via public transport (bus or what the local transport authorities like to term “light rail” – really just trams). There’s also a relatively reliable train system which can get you into the centre of Sydney (Central Station) from more outlying areas. From Central Station it’s just a shortish ride (17-18 minutes) to UNSW via the light rail (it’s direct to the gates of UNSW and services run every 10 minutes or so).
If you wanted to stay by the ocean, you might consider something in the Coogee Bay area. There’s a bus (the 370) which runs every 10-15 minutes and only takes 15 minutes (traffic permitting) to get you to UNSW from the beach. The 370 bus will also take you from UNSW on to the lively inner west suburbs of Newtown (a trip on the 370 bus of around 45 minutes) or Glebe (a trip of around 60 minutes). There is one somewhat cheaper accommodation option in Newtown which we know of, if you are prepared to deal with a travel time to UNSW of 50-60 minutes (see below).
