The problem

Professor Sven Rogge, Dean of UNSW Science, engaged the UNSW Innovation Hub to develop an engagement strategy, focussed on the Grand Challenges and Attractors, as a part of the foundational year of Science Strategy roll out.  The Grand Challenges and Attractors are central to the strategy, aiming to increase collaboration among the schools and business unit and convene the Faculty of Science around topics of societal importance and urgency.

Since the release of the Strategy, staff engagement with the Grand Challenges and Attractors has been limited. Recognising the importance of successful adoption, the Innovation Hub was engaged to identify barriers to adoption and provide strategic recommendations to enhance uptake and impact.

Our approach

The UNSW Innovation Hub held consultation sessions with Academic and professional staff to gather insights into the challenges and opportunities for engagement. These insights were then presented at a one-day leadership workshop, which focused on identifying alignment between staff and leadership, prioritising key challenges, and defining actionable steps to strengthen engagement.

The outcomes

The recommendations emerged from this process are practical and designed to support both staff and leadership in embedding the Grand Challenges and Attractors across the faculty. By addressing barriers, providing clear engagement pathways, and activating early opportunities, the project seeks to strengthen collaboration, guide prioritisation of key challenges to improve the adoption of the Attractors and Grand Challenges, maximising the impact of the Science Strategy.
