A largely market-provided alternative to housing in private dwellings, lodging houses are of interest to housing policy-makers for their potential contributions to affordability, accessibility and other service delivery outcomes – and for their risks.

By investigating the functions and business models of different lodging house types, and the experiences of residents, proprietors and other stakeholders, the research will present a coherent national typology of lodging houses and a clear framework for appropriate policy development and regulatory practice.
