Description

This project will examine how the interaction between a fire and the atmosphere influences the dynamic propagation of bushfires. Interactions between wind, terrain and an active bushfire are known to significantly alter the behaviour of the fire. These interactions can cause a fire to exhibit ‘blow-up’ fire behaviour, which involves an abrupt increase in the rate of spread and intensity of a fire. The scope of this project is flexible based on the candidate’s specific interests but will use coupled fire-atmosphere models to address key issues, such as dynamics of key fire propagation scenarios, identification of environmental thresholds associated with the onset of dynamic fire behaviours, development of models of reduced complexity to support faster than real time simulation of dynamic fire spread.

Desired background

BSc in mathematics, physics, meteorology, BEng (mech), or equivalent preferred. Masters by research or practical experience is an asset. The successful applicant would need to meet the Australian Government H1 or H2A standards and UNSW entry standards.
