Dr David Stevens AM

Dr David Stevens AM is a graduate of the Royal Australian Naval College, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Australian National University (ANU). He served for twenty years as a naval warfare officer before becoming the RAN’s historian in 1994. Thereafter he contributed articles and essays on maritime strategy and naval history to a wide range of Australian and international publications.

Areas of interest

Since 2016 David has been working as an author on the Official History of Australian Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. His volume, In for the long haul: Australia’s operations in the War on Terror is expected to be published before the end of this decade.

His current research interests focus on naval and naval air operations, 1914-18.
