Nishan Gunawardena
Nishan Gunawardena is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Intelligent Systems for State and Societal Resilience Hub (ISSSRH), within the School of Systems and Computing at UNSW Canberra. His research focuses on deep learning, edge computing, and computer vision, with a particular emphasis on mobile and healthcare applications. He completed his PhD in Computer Science at Western Sydney University, where he developed a lightweight eye-tracking algorithm for smartphones optimised for real-time gaze estimation under dynamic visual conditions. Nishan’s interest in machine learning began during his undergraduate studies, where he built a deep learning model for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease using structural MRI data. His industry and academic experience spans roles at the London Stock Exchange Group, Johannes Kepler University, and multiple interdisciplinary research teams. With over seven years of experience in AI research and software development, he continues to develop and apply AI-driven solutions to real-world challenges in health and human-computer interaction.
